List of Film Industries in India 

India produces the Largest number of films in the world, but it is not just Bollywood that is responsible for this. This world record is the result of the efforts of a number of regional film industries based in India. And these regional film businesses are a lot cooler than people think. Some date back to the 1910s and have produced films that have impacted filmmakers all across the world.

There are numerous regional film industries in India that you should investigate. We have tried to include all of them, but check out our list of Indian cinema industries by language and some of their most interesting facts.

1. Bollywood – Hindi Cinema

The Indian Hindi-language film business, now known as Bollywood and earlier known as Bombay cinema, is located in Mumbai (formerly Bombay). The Bollywood Film industry is a subset of Indian film. Bollywood has surpassed the United States’ film industry as the world’s largest film production centre. Since the 1970s, the masala film has been the most successful commercial genre in Bollywood, combining several genres such as action, comedy, romance, drama, and melodrama, as well as musical numbers. Parallel cinema, a different genre of art films that avoids musical numbers and presents realistic material, existed alongside commercial masala blockbusters. Perhaps Bollywood’s greatest impact has been on India’s national identity, where it has become a part of the “Indian storey” alongside the rest of Indian cinema. Bollywood is frequently identified with India’s national identity in India.

2. Sandalwood – Kannada Cinema

Kannada cinema, often known as Sandalwood or Chandanavana, is a branch of Indian cinema that focuses on films made in the Kannada language, which is widely spoken in the state of Karnataka. Sati Sulochana, directed by Y. V. Rao in 1934, was the first Kannada-language talkie film.

3. Tollywood – Telugu Cinema

Telugu cinema, often known as Tollywood, is an Indian cinema industry dedicated to the production of movies in the Telugu language, which is mainly spoken in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. Telugu cinema is located in Film Nagar, a Hyderabad neighbourhood. Tollywood is a combination of the Telugu and Hollywood languages. By 2021, it will have become the most profitable film industry in South Asia.

4. Kollywood – Tamil Cinema

Tamil cinema, often known as Kollywood, is the Indian cinema industry that produces Tamil-language films. It is headquartered in the Kodambakkam neighbourhood of Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

5. Mollywood – Malayalam Cinema

Telugu cinema, often known as Tollywood, is an Indian film industry dedicated to the production of films in the Telugu language, which is mainly spoken in the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states. Telugu cinema is located in Film Nagar, a Hyderabad neighbourhood. Tollywood is a combination of the Telugu and Hollywood languages. By 2021, it will have become the most profitable movie industry in South Asia.

6. Tollywood – Bengali Cinema

Tollywood refers to the Indian Bengali language film industry, which is located in the Tollygunge area of Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The Bengali film industry is known for creating some of Indian cinema’s most critically acclaimed global Parallel Cinema and art films, with several of its creators receiving national and international recognition.

7. Marathi Cinema

Marathi cinema refers to Indian films made in the Marathi language, which is spoken in the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is India’s oldest and pioneering film industry, based in old Mumbai.

8. Bhojiwood – Bhojpuri Cinema

Bhojpuri cinema, often known as Bhojiwood, is a Bhojpuri-language regional cinema industry based in Bihar, India.

9. Dhollywood – Gujarati Cinema

Dhollywood, or Gujarati cinema, is the Gujarati language film industry. It is one of India’s most important regional and vernacular film industries, having produced over a thousand films since its establishment.

10. Ollywood – Odia film industry

The Odia film business, often known as Ollywood, is an Odia-language Indian film industry located in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack in the Indian state of Odisha. Ollywood is a combination of the terms Odia and Hollywood.

11. Pollywood – Punjabi Cinema

Punjabi cinema, often known as Pollywood, is a Punjabi-language film industry centred in Amritsar and Mohali, and centred around the Indian state of Punjab.

12. Konkani Cinema

Konkani cinema is an Indian film business that produces films in the Konkani language, which is spoken mostly in the Indian states of Goa, Maharashtra, and Karnataka, as well as to a lesser extent in Kerala. Goa, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Kerala have all made Konkani films. A total of 145 feature films were released in 2018, as the Indian film industry celebrated its centennial.

13. Rajasthan Cinema

Rajasthani cinema refers to films made in Rajasthan, India’s northwestern state. These films are made in a variety of regional and tribal languages, including Rajasthani dialects like Mewari, Marwari, and Hadoti, among others.

14. Coastalwood – Tulu cinema

Tulu cinema, sometimes known as Coastalwood cinema, is an Indian film genre. Each year, the Tulu film industry produces five to seven films. Enna Thangadi, the first Tulu film, was released in 1971. Previously, these films were usually released in theatres throughout Tulu Nadu. However, the Tulu film industry has evolved to the point where films are now being released in Mangalore, Udupi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Gulf countries at the same time.

15. Haryanvi cinema

Haryanvi cinema is the film industry of Haryana, India, that uses the Haryanvi language.

16. Chakwood – Chakma Cinema

The Chakma language film industry is situated in Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh, Bangladesh, and Myanmar, and is often referred to as Chakwood or Chakma film.

17. Chhollywood – Chhattisgarhi cinema

Chhollywood refers to the cinema industry in the Indian state of Chhattisgarh, as well as films made in the Chhattisgarhi language. With the premiere of Kahi Debe Sandesh, the first Chhattisgarhi-language film, it was founded in 1965.

18. Braj Bhasha Cinema

Braj Bhasha films primarily target rural audiences in the nebulous Braj region, which includes Mathura, Agra, Aligarh, and Hathras in Western Uttar Pradesh, as well as Bharatpur and Dholpur in Rajasthan. It is the most widely spoken language along the Ganges-Yamuna Doab in Uttar Pradesh.

19. Manipur Cinema

In the state of Manipur, Manipuri cinema is a small industry. In the 1970s, Manipuri cinema was born. It includes not just Meitei language films, but also films made by persons from various Manipur communities.

20. Nagpuri Cinema

Nagpuri cinema refers to films made in Jharkhand using the Nagpuri language.

21. Gorkha Cinema

Gorkha cinema comprises of films made in Nepali by Nepali-speaking Indians.

22. Sherdukpen Cinema

Sherdukpen is a native of Arunachal Pradesh, a state in northeastern India. The first Sherdukpen-language film, Crossing Bridges, was introduced by director Songe Dorjee Thongdok (2014).
